A 100 km drive is a bit over 60 miles; a 60 mile drive is a bit under 100 km. ## Watch out for the two gallons A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, so the same car looks about 20% more efficient when its economy is quoted in imperial MPG. Fuel economy is distance divided by fuel used: kilometers divided by litres gives km/L, and miles divided by gallons gives MPG. Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then fill up again. The litres or gallons on the second fill are your fuel used. ## How to measure it properly The number on your dashboard is a computer's estimate. The tank-to-tank method below is what road testers use, and it is the only figure that includes everything your car actually did. - Fill the tank until the pump clicks off. Do not top it up further. - Reset the trip meter. - Drive normally until the tank is at least half empty — the longer the better, because a short sample exaggerates errors. - Fill up again at the same pump if you can, again stopping at the first click. - The litres or gallons on that second fill are your fuel used. The usual culprits, cheapest first, are under-inflated tyres, a clogged air filter, a roof rack or box left on, and unnecessary weight in the boot. To go the other way, multiply km/L by 2.352146 or 2.824809. ## Why one car has three different economy figures Three measurement systems are in common use, and they do not agree. The United States quotes miles per US gallon. The United Kingdom quotes miles per imperial gallon, which is a larger gallon and therefore a flattering number. Most of Europe quotes litres per 100 km, and much of Asia and Latin America quotes kilometers per litre. A car rated at 30 MPG in the US is 36 MPG in Britain and 12.8 km/L in India — the same car, three numbers, none of them wrong. ## The conversion factors ``` MPG (US) × 0.425144 = km/L km/L × 2.352146 = MPG (US) MPG (imperial) × 0.354006 = km/L km/L × 2.824809 = MPG (imperial) L/100km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US) ``` ## Which unit is actually more useful Litres per 100 km is the one that behaves sensibly when you are comparing cars. Because MPG is a ratio with distance on top, the same improvement in MPG saves wildly different amounts of fuel depending on where you start. Going from 10 to 15 MPG saves about 78 litres over 1,000 km. Going from 30 to 35 MPG — the same five MPG — saves about 11 litres. Any combination of units. Trip fuel cost is the distance divided by fuel economy, multiplied by the price per litre or gallon. The cost is shown in whatever currency you entered the price in. Real consumption moves with traffic, terrain, load and driving style, so treat this as a planning figure rather than a quote. ## The calculation ``` fuel needed = distance ÷ fuel economy cost = fuel needed × price per unit ``` Everything is converted to kilometers and litres internally, so you can mix units freely — a distance in miles, an economy in km/L and a price per gallon will still give the right answer. ## Why your real cost will differ A steady motorway cruise can beat the official rating; city traffic, mountains, a roof box or a full load of passengers will all miss it. Cold weather is the most underestimated factor — a short winter journey where the engine never fully warms up can use a third more fuel than the same trip in summer. For budgeting, take the number this calculator gives you and add 10 to 15%. You will rarely be caught short. ## Cutting the number down - Speed is the biggest lever on a long drive. Drag rises with the square of speed, so 110 km/h instead of 130 uses noticeably less fuel over the same distance. - Take the roof box off when you are not using it. They are close enough that a driver used to one system reads the other as roughly familiar and drives accordingly. On a 50 km/h street, driving at what feels like 30 leaves you at 48 km/h, which is fine. Reversed, on a 30 mph street, driving at 50 on a km/h speedometer puts you at 31 mph, which is over the limit. The bigger trap is the motorway. 70 mph is 113 km/h, but 130 km/h is 81 mph. A driver moving between the UK and France who mentally swaps one for the other is out by 11 mph. ## Doing it in your head From km/h to mph, halve it and add a tenth of the original: 120 becomes 60 + 12 = 72, against a true 74.6. From mph to km/h, add half again plus a tenth: 70 becomes 70 + 35 + 7 = 112, against a true 112.7. ## Metres per second The calculator also shows m/s, which is the unit physics and engineering use. Divide km/h by 3.6 to get it. Fuel at 1.60 per litre is 6.06 per US gallon but 7.27 per imperial gallon. Quoting the wrong one makes a country look 20 per cent cheaper or dearer than it is. The same trap applies to fuel economy figures, which is why the economy converter shows US and imperial MPG side by side rather than choosing one. ## A rough check Four litres is a bit more than a US gallon and a bit less than an imperial one. Nothing relies on placeholder text. - Results are announced to screen readers as they change, using a polite live region that does not interrupt. - The whole site works by keyboard, with a visible focus outline on every interactive element and a skip link to the main content. - Text and interface colours meet or exceed the AA contrast ratio. Colour is never the only way information is conveyed. - Interactive controls are at least 44 by 44 pixels on touch devices. - Layout reflows to a single column on small screens without horizontal scrolling, and text can be enlarged with browser zoom without loss of content. - The one animation on the site is a brief fade when a result updates, and it is disabled for anyone whose system requests reduced motion. - There is no autoplaying media, no carousel, no pop-up and no time limit anywhere. ## Known limitations - Numeric fields use the browser's native number input, whose spinner controls vary in size and behaviour between browsers. Typing a value always works. - Reference tables are wide by nature. On a narrow screen they scroll horizontally inside their own box rather than stretching the page. - If the self-hosted font files fail to load, text falls back to a system font. Distances, fuel quantities, vehicle economy figures and fuel prices are never transmitted to us, never written to a database, and are gone as soon as you close the tab. We could not retrieve them if we wanted to. ## Server logs Like effectively every website, our hosting provider records a line for each request. A log entry contains your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, the HTTP status, the referring page and your browser's user-agent string. We use these logs only to keep the site online, diagnose faults and detect abuse such as scraping or denial-of-service traffic. They are not combined with anything else, not used for marketing, and are deleted on the hosting provider's routine schedule. Under the GDPR our lawful basis is legitimate interests: running a secure, functioning website. ## Cookies and local storage We set no cookies of our own and store nothing in your browser's local storage. The cookie policy sets out the full detail, including what would change if advertising is introduced. ## Third parties Web fonts are self-hosted. Typefaces are served from our own domain, not from Google Fonts or any other font service. Your browser therefore makes no request to a third party for them, and no third party receives your IP address. This is deliberate: font services log the IP address of every visitor who loads a font, and a German court has held that embedding Google Fonts without consent breaches the GDPR. No analytics, no social widgets, no embedded media. There is no Google Analytics, no tag manager, no Facebook pixel, no share buttons, no embedded video or map. When you load a page here, your browser talks to our server and to nobody else. Hosting. Our hosting provider processes requests on our behalf and generates the server logs described above. Advertising. The site currently carries no advertising. If that changes, the network will be named here before any ad is served, this policy will be updated first, and a consent banner will appear where the law requires one. Ad networks typically use cookies and similar identifiers to serve and measure ads; you would be able to opt out of personalised advertising through the network's own controls and through optout.aboutads.info or youronlinechoices.com . ## International transfers Our hosting and font providers may process requests on servers outside your country, including in the United States. Because we hold no accounts and no submitted data, the practical attack surface is small. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of information you send us by email, which is not an encrypted medium. ## Your rights Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent. Because we hold no accounts or profiles, in almost every case there is nothing to export or erase. If you are in the UK or the EEA you may complain to your national supervisory authority. If you are a California resident, we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA and CPRA, and we do not discriminate against anyone exercising their rights. Should advertising be introduced, we will honour Global Privacy Control signals where the law requires it. ## Children This is a general-audience utility, not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, children included. Distance conversion is exact arithmetic. The mile has been defined as exactly 1,609.344 metres since 1959, so a kilometer-to-mile result is as correct as the number you typed in. Only the display is rounded. Anything involving fuel is an estimate. Real consumption depends on conditions no calculator can see: traffic, gradient, altitude, weather, tyre pressure, vehicle load, air conditioning, fuel grade, engine condition and driving style. Expect real-world figures to differ from a calculated one by 10 to 20% in ordinary conditions, and by considerably more in extreme ones. ## Not professional advice Nothing on this site is financial, legal, tax, insurance or mechanical advice, and no relationship of professional and client is created by using it. In particular, do not rely on these calculators alone for: - Tax or business mileage claims. Tax authorities publish their own official rates, rules and record-keeping requirements, and those take precedence over anything here. Speak to an accountant. - Insurance declarations or annual mileage estimates on a policy. - Odometer or vehicle history disputes , where the evidence is the documentation, not a calculation. - Vehicle purchase decisions , where you should rely on official manufacturer figures and independent testing. - Diagnosing a mechanical fault. A falling economy figure is a prompt to see a mechanic, not a diagnosis. ## Do not use these tools while driving Pull over somewhere safe first. Using a phone at the wheel is illegal in most places and dangerous everywhere. No conversion is worth a collision. ## Fuel range and remote routes Never plan a journey so that you would arrive at a fuel stop with nothing in reserve based on a calculated range. Leave a genuine margin, and more on remote routes where the next station may be closed, out of stock or further than the map suggests. ## Currency The fuel cost calculator is currency-agnostic: it returns a figure in whatever currency you entered the price in. It performs no exchange-rate conversion and holds no exchange rates. ## Errors and omissions We check our figures and correct mistakes quickly, but this site is provided without warranty and may contain errors. If a result looks wrong to you, it may well be wrong. Please tell us at contact@kilometer-mileage.com rather than relying on it.
