## The two numbers worth remembering

Every distance conversion on this site comes from one exact definition: the international mile has been fixed at 1,609.344 metres since 1959, which makes both directions simple multiplication.

```
miles = kilometers × 0.621371
kilometers = miles × 1.609344
```

For rough mental arithmetic, kilometers to miles is close to multiplying by 0.6, and miles to kilometers is close to adding half again. A 100 km drive is a bit over 60 miles; a 60 mile drive is a bit under 100 km.

## Watch out for the two gallons

A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, so the same car looks about 20% more efficient when its economy is quoted in imperial MPG. If you are comparing a British review with an American one, check which gallon each is using before you conclude anything. The fuel economy converter shows both at once.
